The Oakura Bay community is very fortunate to have some great amenities. These include a community hall (available for bookings), store and takeaway/cafe. A sports field and community hub building serves the local rugby playing community. With the addition of a hardcourt, netball games will also be able to be played locally. Nearby local maraes are available for bookings also.

Community Hall
We are very fortunate to have a Community Hall that serves as a hub for a variety of social activities and informative meetings that occur in the Bay. The hall is also available for hire. Contact Margaret de Jong – Mobile 0274 887 135.
Currently, the hall is undergoing an external facelift with new windows throughout as well as new exterior cladding. Our grateful thanks to Glen Ferguson, John Fitt and Malcolm Devereux in particular for the extensive work they are putting in.
The Whangarei District Council Mobile Library can be found outside the hall. Visits are scheduled for Thursdays, 22 September, 20 October and 17 November 2022 between 2.00 – 3.00pm.
For assistance and advice on medical matters, Ngātiwai nurses are available at the Medical Room (First Aid Clinic beside the Hall) between 10.30am – 12.30pm every second Thursday of the month. For more information, contact Ki A Ora Ngātiwai Phone (09) 435 4586.
A defibrillator (AED) is also available in the Medical Room. When a call is made to 111, the operator will pass on the necessary code to get into the lock box to access the defibrillator. Remember to turn the defibrillator on and follow the oral instructions. A video on how to use the defibrillator is available here.

SPORTS FACILITIES AND RUGBY CLUB
The Council owned reserve at the end of Wharua Road, Oakura contains a single rugby field used by the Whangaruru Rugby Football Club (Whangaruru RFC). Along with the field, a new clubroom with changing facilities is in the end stages of completion to replace the previously inadequate porticom facilities that were being used on the site. Upon completion, there will be an official opening of the building. We will let you know the date and time once this is confirmed.
On behalf of WDC, the Whangaruru Coastal Community & Sports Association is the administrative body. Generally, it is felt that the new facilities will serve all community members and allow for the promotion of healthy and physical sporting pursuits.
With the recent announcement of a funding allocation of $850,000.00 towards the Oakura Sports Park Development and Wetland Restoration from Three Waters Better Off Funding (Tranche 1), an additional field, netball and basketball court will be added to the sports complex. The planned children’s playground will also be in the immediate vicinity. We will keep you updated as further details come to hand.
